However, public health experts are adamantly cautioning against such parallels, emphasizing critical distinctions that prevent hantavirus from becoming a global health crisis of similar magnitude.
Unlike the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2, which spreads efficiently from person to person through respiratory droplets and aerosols, hantavirus is primarily transmitted to humans through contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine, and saliva. The virus typically becomes airborne when these contaminated materials are disturbed, allowing individuals to inhale the aerosolized particles. This zoonotic pathway fundamentally limits its capacity for widespread human-to-human transmission, a cornerstone of any global pandemic.
