This initiative, developed in partnership with the Muncie Police Department, provides an immersive experience designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical police work.
The program, which commenced last month, engages approximately two dozen students in a comprehensive curriculum. Participants attend weekly sessions focusing on various facets of policing, including forensic science basics, crime scene investigation techniques, legal procedures, community policing strategies, and physical fitness training relevant to police academies. They also interact directly with active-duty officers, gaining invaluable insights into daily operations and the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel. A recent session involved a simulated traffic stop scenario, allowing students to practice communication and de-escalation skills under supervised conditions.
"It's not just about what you see on TV; it's so much more intricate and demanding," stated Amelia Jenkins, a junior participating in the program, reflecting on her experience. "Learning about constitutional law and how evidence is actually collected has completely changed my perspective. I'm seriously considering a career in criminal justice now."
