Sheboygan bids farewell to one of its cherished pillars, Evelyn Elizabeth Prevenas, who passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024, at the venerable age of 98. A devoted matriarch, community advocate, and an embodiment of enduring spirit, Mrs. Prevenas leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories woven through her decades in the Sheboygan community.
Born Evelyn Elizabeth Ditter on April 13, 1925, in Port Washington, Wisconsin, she carried the small-town charm and strong work ethic of her upbringing throughout her life. A proud graduate of Port Washington High School’s Class of 1943, Evelyn’s journey led her to Robert W. Prevenas, whom she married on May 10, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Their union blossomed into a family of six children, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren, forming the core of her profound legacy. Robert preceded her in death in 2012, after 65 years of marriage.
While primarily a devoted homemaker, Mrs. Prevenas also contributed her talents to the H.C. Prange Company in downtown Sheboygan, first in the children's department and later applying her keen eye to drapery. Her community involvement extended to her active membership in Holy Name of Jesus Parish, where her faith and camaraderie shone brightly. "Evelyn was the kind of person who made everyone feel like family," recalled longtime neighbor and bridge club partner, Clara Jensen. "Her smile was infectious, and her pies were legendary. She truly made our neighborhood a brighter place."
Mrs. Prevenas embraced life with remarkable vigor, pursuing a diverse array of hobbies. She was a familiar face at local bowling alleys, a keen competitor at bridge club, and enjoyed the tranquility of gardening and fishing. Her love for reading and crossword puzzles reflected a sharp mind, but it was her culinary prowess that often gathered her loved ones. Her kitchen was a hub of warmth and laughter, producing countless meals and baked goods that became cherished family traditions. "She always had an extra plate, an extra story, and an extra hug," shared lifelong friend, Thomas Miller, who often saw her cheering passionately for the Sheboygan A's and the Green Bay Packers. "Her spirit was truly indomitable."
Evelyn's unwavering devotion to her family was paramount. She relished time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, finding immense joy in their milestones and everyday moments. Her resilience and unwavering optimism served as an inspiration to all who knew her. She is survived by her six children: Robert (Linda) Prevenas, Mary Lynn (Jerry) Meyer, Michael (Kathy) Prevenas, David (Marilyn) Prevenas, Lisa Prevenas, and Paul (Ann) Prevenas, along with her sister Elaine Ditter.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Monday, February 12, 2024, at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, following visitation from 10:00 AM. Entombment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice, honoring Evelyn's compassionate spirit.
