Sheboygan, WI – The City of Sheboygan is mourning the loss of Patrick M. Sheridan, a revered civic leader, decorated Vietnam veteran, and former City Engineer, who passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at the age of 78. Sheridan's extensive contributions to Sheboygan’s public works and his distinguished military service left an indelible mark on the community he so diligently served for decades.
Born on August 19, 1945, in Sheboygan to James and Angeline (Provo) Sheridan, Patrick was a lifelong resident with a deep commitment to his hometown. He received his foundational education at Holy Name Catholic School and graduated from Sheboygan North High School in the Class of 1963. His pursuit of knowledge led him to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1967, laying the groundwork for a career dedicated to urban development.
Sheridan’s professional journey began at the Sheboygan County Highway Department, before he transitioned to the City of Sheboygan Public Works Department in 1975. His expertise and leadership quickly became evident, culminating in his appointment as City Engineer in 1980, a role he held with distinction until his retirement in 2007. During his tenure, Sheridan was the architect behind numerous critical infrastructure projects, including the comprehensive reconstruction of major thoroughfares, significant expansions of the city’s water and sewer systems, and the monumental Sheboygan Riverfront Redevelopment Project. His vision was also instrumental in the planning and successful construction of the South Pier, a landmark that has significantly enhanced the city's appeal and economic vitality.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Sheridan answered the call to serve his nation with courage and honor. From 1968 to 1970, he served in the U.S. Army, deploying to Vietnam with the First Cavalry Division. For his valor and dedication, he was awarded the Bronze Star, a testament to his unwavering commitment in times of conflict. Upon his return, he married Barbara Schilder on December 28, 1968, a union that blossomed into a loving family.
"Patrick was a quiet force, a meticulous planner whose fingerprints are on nearly every piece of modern infrastructure in our city," commented City Council President Evelyn Reed. "His dedication wasn't just to blueprints, but to the everyday lives of Sheboygan residents, ensuring safe and efficient public services. He truly built the foundations of our future." Former Public Works Director Robert Jensen added, "He approached every challenge with integrity and a deep sense of civic duty. He understood the long-term impact of his decisions, always advocating for quality and sustainability."
A devoted family man, Patrick cherished time with his wife, Barbara, their three sons, Patrick Jr. (Angie), Michael (Jennifer), and Kevin (Amy), eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was an avid reader, particularly enjoying history and non-fiction, and found joy in golfing, walking his dog, and sharing his passion for local history and community development with loved ones.
Patrick is also survived by his sister, Mary (Frank) Nytes. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James.
A visitation will be held on Monday, April 22, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Ballhorn Chapels Funeral & Cremation Care Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Parish, 807 Superior Ave., Sheboygan, with Rev. Norberto Sandoval officiating. Full military honors will follow the service, leading to entombment at Gardens of Peace Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be directed to Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Parish or the Humane Society of Sheboygan County, reflecting Patrick’s lifelong dedication to his faith and community.
